ARLINGTON, VA — The Association of International Automobile Manufacturers (AIAM), has named John Mendel, executive vice president of American Honda Motor Co., Inc., as chairman of AIAM’s board of directors. AIAM represents 14 international motor vehicle manufacturers that account for 31 percent of all light duty motor vehicles produced in the United States.
Mendel succeeds outgoing chairman Jim Press, formerly president of Toyota Motor North America, Inc., who recently joined Chrysler LLC as a senior executive.
"John Mendel’s 30 years of experience in our industry will be a significant asset to AIAM," said Michael Stanton, president and chief executive officer of AIAM. "As our member companies continue to increase their investments in the U.S., John’s leadership will help AIAM continue its advocacy for free trade, consumer choice, enhanced vehicle safety and protection of the environment."
"The prospect of working closely with Mike Stanton and my colleagues on the board comes at a time of many challenges facing AIAM companies," said Mendel. "I believe, however, that such an environment truly demonstrates the exceptional capabilities of international automakers to meet those challenges."
Before being promoted to his current position at American Honda, Mendel was senior vice president for automobile operations, responsible for product planning, advertising, marketing, public relations and distribution for both Honda and Acura Automobile Divisions. Prior to joining American Honda in December 2004, Mendel served as executive vice president and chief operating officer for Mazda North American Operations from January 2002 until November 2004.
Mendel began his career with Ford Motor Co., U.S. operations in 1976 and until 2002 held numerous sales and marketing positions within Ford and Lincoln Mercury Divisions, Ford Customer Service and Ford of Europe.
Mendel has undergraduate degrees in business and economics and an MBA from Duke University.
