CLEVELAND — ContiTech Power Transmission Group and the Litens Automotive Group of Canada recently received the Automechanika Innovation Award for 2004 for a joint project the two companies worked on to improve the service life of camshaft drives.

Automechanika, held every two years in Frankfurt, Germany, is Europe’s largest auto show and attracts exhibitors and participants from all over the world. This year’s event was held September 14-19. Industry judges selected six new developments from 105 innovations submitted from 12 countries.

The main components of the new award-winning technology are a sprocket (Litens SmartSprocketTM/CTC) and a high-performance timing belt (CONTI HSN-POWER), that perform as a vibration damper system. With the oval sprocket/rubber timing belt technology from ContiTech and Litens, timing drives are quieter and require no maintenance, making it easier to fulfill the requirements of worldwide emission standards and reduce fuel consumption. he new technology will be used for the first time in TFSI engines from Audi and PDI engines from VW.

“Automobile engineers are faced with many challenges today,” said Roger Homer, director of marketing for ContiTech’s North America Power Transmission Group. “They must design engines and related components that are more environmentally friendly, take up less space and yet provide longer service life. This award recognizes our joint efforts in addressing those issues.”

Based in Woodbridge, Ontario, just northwest of Toronto, Litens Automotive Group provides engineered solutions for automotive power transmission challenges. Litens also develops and manufactures specialized power transmission products for global OE automotive customers.

ContiTech Power Transmission Group, a business unit of the ContiTech Division of Continental AG, develops and manufactures a wide range of drive systems for the automotive original equipment and replacement markets, appliance and industrial equipment industries.
