Every so often, our editorial staff selects one aftermarket industry professional to get to know a little better. Participants are asked to respond to a series of questions that can be answered in about the same amount of time you might spend chatting at the office coffee pot or waiting for an elevator. In this installment of “Five Minutes With,” we get to know Jonathon Miranda, an automotive student attending Ohio Technical College in Cleveland. Miranda is the grand-prize winner of the TechForce Foundation’s FutureTechs Rock Awards. The FutureTechs Rock Awards recognize and celebrate students’ commitment to and passion for the technician profession and the transportation industry.
What was your first job in the industry?
My first job in the industry was at the age of 15 at a Mazda/Mitsubishi dealership back home in Woodbridge, Virginia.
What do you like best about your current position?
I am currently in training with BMW S.T. E. P. (Service Technician Education Program), from 7:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., and then I go to a part-time job at a car dealership, which is a great opportunity to learn from other techs.
Did you initially intend to pursue a career in the aftermarket? If not, what drew you to the industry and what keeps you here?
Since 8th grade I knew that I wanted to be part of the auto industry. In high school I took a four-year automotive program at Hylton High School in Woodbridge, Virginia. During the program, I took part in many competitions that allowed me to win scholarship money. I enjoyed learning and putting what I learned to the test at future competitions!
What do you do when not at work?
I try to stay productive, read over information related to the auto industry that can help me further my knowledge and then I go play soccer and workout.
What one word best sums up your personality?
DEDICATED.
What are you currently reading?
I am currently reading something for training, a warranty manual, to familiarize myself with how BMW warranties work.
If you could time-travel, to where and in what era would you want to visit?
I think I am living my best life right now and I don’t think I would want to travel.
