Every so often, our editorial staff selects one aftermarket industry professional to get to know a little better. Participants are asked to respond to a series of questions that can be answered in about the same amount of time you might spend chatting at the office coffee pot or waiting for an elevator. In today’s installment of “Five Minutes With,” we get to know Georgianne Dickey, senior manager of product and marketing communications, NTN Bearing Corporation of America, a little better.
What was your first job in the industry?
My first job in the industry was as a credit specialist, as I had financial experience in my past. In less than a year I moved into the role of marketing coordinator for our core brands, putting my marketing degree and passion to use.
What do you like best about your current position?
There is so much to like about my current position it’s hard to choose what is best. I am lucky to have responsibility for product, some engineering and marketing communications for legacy brands owned by a company relatively new to the automotive aftermarket. Probably what I like best is using my experience to help develop the program that has been growing at NTN for the past few years. Directly impacting results by utilizing my skill and knowledge is very rewarding. Oh, and did I mention I work with some really great people? Well, I do!
Did you initially intend to pursue a career in the aftermarket? If not, what drew you to the industry and what keeps you here?
I did not. I actually didn’t know anything about the automotive aftermarket industry. After I graduated, I needed a job and just fell into working for a manufacturer in the industry. As I got more involved in my company and then the industry, I knew it was home. The people are amazing and the opportunities are great. If the industry will keep me, I plan to never leave it.
What do you do when not at work?
My family is definitely top of my list. I’m married and have two daughters, 12 and 15. My oldest is a competitive dancer so I am one of those “Dance Moms.”
When our weekends aren’t consumed with that we like to get away for the weekend and explore. Trying new things and traveling are all on the list.
What one word best sums up your personality?
Enthusiastic!!!!!
What was your first car?
A 1963 Studebaker Lark I bought just over 30 years ago, and I still have it!
Who was your childhood hero?
Okay, so this will sound corny, but it was my dad, and still is. He is an amazing man who is fun, loving and hard-working. He instilled a good work ethic in me whether I’m working toward professional or personal goals. He’s always been a great motivator and reminds me to have fun along the way.
Favorite quote/mantra/motto?
Choose purpose over perfect. I’ve always liked this because when you act with purpose, whether you achieve perfection or not, you define your core values and gift yourself a sense of pride.
