MEMA Warns Members About Possible West Coast Port Shutdown

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The legislative office of the Motor & Equipment Manufacturers Association (MEMA) issued a notice to members that a protracted labor dispute between the Longshoremen’s Union and the Pacific Maritime Association has resulted in delays and backlogs of cargo being loaded and offloaded from ships using the ports. The economic impact of this dispute and the subsequent delays could reach as much as $ 1 billion per day.

According to MEMA, while a federal mediator has joined the talks, there has been no resolution and the situation continues to deteriorate as an agreement has not been reached.

MEMA is encouraging its members to contact their congressional representatives today and urge them to encourage the President to take all necessary actions, including emergency powers under the Taft-Hartley Act, in order to resolve the situation.
