East Penn Receives $32.5 Million DOE Grant to Manufacture Advanced Lead-Acid Batteries

With financial assistance from the DOE, East Penn plans to quickly become a leading U.S. source of Advanced VRLA and UltraBattery power serving the global vehicle market with viable, safe, cost-effective and highly recyclable battery products.

LYON STATION, Pa. — East Penn Manufacturing Co. has received a $32.5 million grant from the United States Department of Energy (DOE) to expand production capabilities for the manufacture of advanced lead-acid batteries. These batteries will serve as a critical component of hybrid electric vehicles.

The grant, under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, was presented by U.S. Transportation Deputy Secretary John Porcari. “With the help of companies like East Penn, we will be able to build vehicles that achieve, and even exceed, the new fuel-efficiency standard for 2016. This is an investment in the future of manufacturing, and the future of clean, green transportation in the United States,” stated the DOT Deputy Secretary.

Rep. Tim Holden, representing Pennsylvania’s 17th District, said, “We could not have made a better investment in a better company, a better family or a better work force.”

With financial assistance from the DOE, East Penn plans to quickly become a leading U.S. source of Advanced VRLA and UltraBattery power serving the global vehicle market with viable, safe, cost-effective and highly recyclable battery products. East Penn aspires to play a significant role in conserving the nation’s energy consumption by assisting OE manufactures and automotive aftermarket suppliers in providing a commercially viable power alternative for today’s global consumer. East Penn’s commitment to lead-acid and other advancements in new battery technology has availed the company unique opportunities in new markets.
