TROY, MI — ThyssenKrupp Steel and Stainless USA, LLC have filed permit applications in the states of Alabama and Louisiana for a $2.9 billion facility in the United States. Last month, ThyssenKrupp confirmed that it is proceeding with the development of a new state-of-the-art steel and stainless steel manufacturing and processing facility in one of the two states.

Over the past several months, ThyssenKrupp has been conducting extensive due diligence to construct and operate a $2.9 billion facility in the United States. The facility will manufacture and process carbon steel and stainless steel for high-value applications by manufacturers in the U.S. and throughout North America. The plant will serve industries including automotive, packaging, construction, electrical and utility, in addition to serving manufacturers of appliances, precision machinery and engineered products.

The filings were submitted to each state’s respective environmental agency, the Alabama Department of Environmental Management and the Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality. These permits are required under the Clean Air Act to provide an analysis of emission sources prior to construction.

The ThyssenKrupp applications in each state detail several items, including: a description of the construction process; emissions calculations and air dispersion modeling assessments; best achievable control technologies employed during construction to ensure limited emissions; and computer modeling demonstrating that the facility, once operational, will meet or exceed the National Ambient Air Quality Standards and applicable state air guidelines.

“We are confident that our filings demonstrate ThyssenKrupp’s environmental know-how and our focus on the development of processes that are environmentally friendly and conserve resources,” said Robert Soulliere, president and chief executive officer of ThyssenKrupp Steel and Stainless USA, LLC. “We are committed to incorporating state-of-the-art technology to limit any air emissions.”

The new plant complex, which is expected to begin operations in 2010, is considered to be one of the largest private industrial development projects in the United States over the next decade. During construction, the facility will create upwards of 29,000 jobs. When it is fully operational, the plant will employ 2,700 people.

ThyssenKrupp said it expects to make a decision about the final site soon.

“We look forward to continue working with officials in both Alabama and Louisiana as we move forward with the site selection process,” Soulliere concluded.
