The Week in Review (Oct. 9-13, 2006)

Our Week in Review email, typically distributed on Friday afternoons, is being distributed today due to our attendance last week at the Automotive Distribution Network’s joint meeting of its Network Jobber Advisory Council and Network Service Dealer Advisory Council . Thanks to the Network for their hospitality! Stay tuned: On Wednesday, we will publish our exclusive report from the event.

For several weeks now, the most head-turning headlines on aftermarketNews have been about people in the industry, and this past week was no exception. The most highly read story on aftermarketNews last week told of aftermarket veteran Larry Pavey’s new post at Federated Auto Parts.

Pavey is a 30 year aftermarket veteran who began his career at Walker Manufacturing. He worked for Echlin and Dana Corp. for 20 years at the Brake Parts Inc. division where he served as president for 13 years, building the business into one of the largest manufacturers in the industry. After Dana, he served as CEO of ARI and as a consultant for Global Parts Solutions. In his new role with Federated, Pavey will serve as a corporate advisor to the management team.

Many of Pavey’s colleagues from Dana became executives at Affinia Group, a company that also issued a widely read personnel announcement last week. Following the recent news that the company is restructuring its marketing operations, last week Affinia Group announced that it has also added two new members to its corporate finance team and also realigned the duties of some existing corporate finance managers. Following closely behind the news at Federated and Affinia was even more personnel-related news. Philadelphia store owner Harris Steinberg has been named the 2006 Counterman magazine Counter Professional of the Year, Presented by WIX Filters. Steinberg, owner of Morris Auto Parts, will receive an all-expenses paid trip to Las Vegas to attend Automotive Aftermarket Industry Week (AAIW), the world’s largest trade-only automotive show. Brian Cruickshank, Counterman editor, will present Steinberg with the award at an Automotive Warehouse Distributors Association lunch held during AAIW on Oct. 30.

Popular aftermarket columnist, and Babcox contributor, Mitch Schneider has been named to head the Automotive Aftermarket Industry Association’s (AAIA) new segment for automotive service and repair professionals. A fourth generation technician and repair shop owner/operator, Schneider has been selected to direct AAIA’s new Car Care Professionals Network (CCPN). The group has been established to represent, support and improve automotive service and repair businesses, by providing a national platform to promote communication and networking between service professionals, manufacturers, distributors and others.

Turning away from the talk of industry executives, two other stories from the past week proved to be of high interest to AMN readers, including news that Delphi may sell its Power Products business, after determining the business is no longer a core operation for the company. In addition, projections that India is becoming the automotive industry’s fastest-growing producer was also widely read. According to the publication Deutsche Presse-Agentur, production of passenger cars in India has jumped by more than 100 percent in the span of five years, to 1.11 million vehicles sold last year. Analysts say India is now going head-to-head with China in terms of being an attractive manufacturing location.
