Tata Motors has moved production of the Nano, which aims to become the world’s cheapest car, to a new factory in the western Indian state of Gujarat, according to a report from the Detroit Free Press.
The move comes weeks after violent protests shut down the Nano factory in West Bengal. Local farmers in the region had been protesting for nearly two years, claiming insufficient compensation for their land on which the factory was built.
The new $416.6-million factory would produce 250,000 to 300,000 Nanos initially. The company still plans to launch the car by year’s end, possibly by initiating production at existing company factories in Pune and Pantnagar, said the Free Press report.
