The UAW’s quick settlement Friday morning of the one-day strike at American Axle & Manufacturing Inc. in Detroit finds the union again authorizing a concept it once loathed — a two-tier wage structure that ensures future employees never make as much as current ones.

American Axle Strike Causes GM to Idle Plant

In a move that already is rippling through the auto industry, about 6,500 UAW auto-parts workers hit the picket lines Thursday morning at American Axle & Manufacturing Inc. in Detroit and other cities. A 4-year contract with UAW members at American Axle, one of the world’s largest auto suppliers, expired at midnight Wednesday and the two sides could not reach a tentative agreement. By late Thursday the strike already was affecting General Motors Corp., American Axle’s biggest customer and former owner.

UAW Members at American Axle Plants on Strike

About 7,000 UAW members at 12 American Axle plants in Michigan, Ohio and New York went on strike early this morning. “We’re on strike, and we’ll resume negotiations today,” a UAW spokesman said. Negotiations began in December, and a tentative agreement was expected. But shortly after the 4-year contract expired at midnight, talks broke off and the union went on strike.

The 4-year UAW contract covering 7,500 workers at Detroit-based American Axle & Manufacturing Inc. will expire at midnight tonight. Speedway Motorsports (SMI) has appointed James Holden, former CEO and president of DaimlerChrysler, to the company’s board of directors. Holden recently completed 27 years in the automotive industry including 19 with DaimlerChrysler, and its predecessor, Chrysler Corp. Highlights of his career include being named president of DaimlerChrysler in 1999 and CEO in June 2000.

GPI Announces Merger with Straus-Frank Co.

David J. Straus, chairman and CEO of Strafco, Inc. and O. Temple Sloan, Jr., chairman and CEO of General Parts, Inc. (GPI), have jointly announced an agreement to merge the two companies. Both GPI and Strafco, also known as Straus-Frank Co., have been members of the CARQUEST Distribution Group for more than 30 years.

Choice of Plant Upsets Steel Workers Union

Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. may have violated its contract with the United Steelworkers of America by deciding to build a new line of passenger tires at a nonunion plant in Lawton, Okla., the union said. But the Akron tire maker denies it has broken the contract, and said it has no plans to move production of its new Assurance all-season radial tires to a union factory. The disagreement comes just five months after the two sides signed a new three-year contract, following months of tense bargaining that threatened to escalate several times into a strike or lockout.

WIX Filters has teamed up with the engineers and staff at Joe Gibbs Racing to create a new cabin air filtration system designed to protects drivers’ respiratory systems from particulate matter, like dust, soot and rubber; noxious fumes, gas and oil vapors, and most importantly, carbon monoxide. SKF USA Inc. and Roush Racing have signed a new sponsorship agreement that features SKF as the primary sponsor of Jeff Burton’s No. 99 Ford Taurus for two NASCAR Nextel Cup events: February 22 in Rockingham, N.C., and March 14 in Atlanta, Ga.
