GAAS Panel Asks, “Do You Know Where You’re Going To?”

Diana Ross’ classic hit, Do you know where you’re going to? begged the same questions facing the aftermarket today: Do we know where we’re going? Do we like what we’re seeing on the way? And perhaps more to the point, do we even like where we’re headed? According to GAAS panel moderator Steve Handschuh, COO of the Automotive Aftermarket Suppliers Association (AASA), these are essential questions as the industry move through a pivotal point in its history. Handschuh believes that in 10 years, the industry will look back at this time and agree that it was an important period of transition.

Growth in business often means building up or moving out, as existing facilities strain under expanding inventory and customer pressures. As growing pains go, however, it’s really not a bad problem to have, although the decision to uproot and move can be a tough one, especially for a company like Pat Young Service Co., which had been in the same spot for decades. But the fact remained that the Federated member had long outgrown its main distribution center in Avon, OH, a suburb on the west side of Cleveland.

PUBLISHER’S PERSPECTIVE: Membership Has Its Privileges

You can point to many industry influences, but none can hold a candle to the importance of programmed distribution. Its evolution within this market has been the single-most influential phenomenon our industry has ever seen. Nobody sells more automotive products (combined) today than NAPA, the industry’s very first group. With some 6,000 participating outlets, no other entity (program group or retailer) can match their overall reach. From the time they started some 80 years ago, they’ve repeatedly set new standards of performance excellence across many distribution and store functions. You could argue that no program group concept, in any market or industry, has come close to the level of success and brand recognition than NAPA. While they are quite an impressive bunch, the success of programmed distribution does not end with them.
