TI Automotive Names Peter Venter Managing Director, Global Aftermarket

Venter joins TI Automotive from Acument Global Technologies, where he was vice president and general manager for North America. He has also held management positions with RH Burton Co. in Columbus, Ohio; Mr. Gasket Performance Group in Cleveland, Ohio; Flowserve Corp. in Dallas, Texas; and The Bruedan Corp. in Bolton, Conn. He began his career and spent 20 years with Echlin, which merged with Dana Corporation in 1998.

Modine Finalizes U.S. Plant Closures as Part of Global Restructuring

Modine Manufacturing Co. has finalized the closure of three North American plants as part of a restructuring program designed to realign its manufacturing operations, improve profitability and strengthen global competitiveness. Scheduled for closing are Modine’s plants in Camdenton, Mo.; Pemberville, Ohio; and Logansport, Ind. Modine will be discussing these planned closures with the appropriate labor unions at Pemberville and Logansport. Also, on Feb. 4, as part of its global manufacturing realignment, Modine announced the intended closure of its facility in Tubingen, Germany.

Bosch Expands Automotive Electronics Engineering Capacity with New Michigan Technical Center

Bosch has opened a new technical center in Plymouth Township, MI, to enhance and expand its engineering and development capacity. The $37.5 million, 225,000-square-foot facility, which sits on 76 acres, houses more than 400 associates. The facility features research and development capabilities, as well as engineering space for its automotive electronics, starter motors and generators and electrical drives divisions.

Tomorrow’s Technician Editor Serves as Team Judge to Winning Team in National Student Auto Skills Competition

Earlier this week, 50 two-person student teams from across the country competed against each other, and against the clock, to accurately diagnose and fix vehicles in the 2006 Ford/AAA Student Auto Skills National Finals. The competition took place June 27 in Dearborn, MI. Two aspiring techs Bradley Bolton and Aaron Clay, seniors at Paris High School in Paris, TX, only needed 29 minutes and 34 seconds to accurately diagnose and fix their Ford Mustang Convertible and win the 2006 Ford/AAA Student Auto Skills national finals on Tuesday. Ed Sunkin, editor of Tomorrow’s Technician, a B-to-B automotive tech magazine that is distributed to 1,200 NATEF-certified schools, reaching more than 50,000 automotive technician students, served as a Team Judge for the Paris, TX, duo.

When Mary Lou Parlato throws on her red flannel shirt and gets ready to work on cars at Macomb Community College, she considers herself to be just like one of the boys. Her hands get dirty and grime gets into her nails. At 79, she’s the oldest student in her automotive technology class. But her gender stands out just as much. According to the Michigan Secretary of State’s Office, only 76 of the 35,464 licensed mechanics in the state are women.

Tenneco Wins New Exhaust Aftertreatment Business With International Truck and Engine Corp.

Tenneco has been awarded a contract with International Truck and Engine Corp. to supply exhaust aftertreatment systems for its entire line of medium-duty diesel vehicles with International engines, launching in 2007. The contract is Tenneco’s first in North America for diesel emission control technologies for the medium-duty commercial vehicle segment.
