Sumitomo to Build New Plant in Thailand to Produce Dunlop Tires

Sumitomo Rubber Industries plans to start operating a new tire plant in Thailand by January 2007, according to Ryochi Sawada, president of the tiremaker’s Thai business. Sawada’s remarks were made to media sources in Bangkok. Construction of the new plant, to be located in Rayong province, is slated to begin in August.

Beach Elected Secretary of TIA

The Tire Industry Association (TIA) announced that Dan Beach, president and CEO of the Tire Alliance Groupe (TAG), has been elected to the position of secretary within the organization. Beach was named secretary on Apr. 22 at the TIA board of directors meeting held in Louisville, Ky. He will begin his new role with TIA on Nov. 1.

Rubber Companies Agree to EPA Clean-Up

Five rubber companies have agreed to pay some $18 million to the U.S. EPA to fund final clean-up of a Canton, Ohio, landfill the government said they polluted. Current tiremakers Goodyear and Bridgestone, and rubber companies Goodyear Aerospace, BFGoodrich and GenCorp, agreed to a consent decree by the U.S. District Court to fund the clean-up and refund the state of Ohio $875,000 in past costs.

Titan International, Inc. Announces Record First Quarter Net Income and Earnings Per Share

Wheel and tire supplier Titan International posted a record first quarter net income of $11.2 million, up 111 percent from $5.3 million for first quarter 2004. Basic earnings per share were also a record at $.68 for the quarter, increasing 172 percent from $.25 for first quarter 2004.
