Herman Trend Alert: Agriculture Will Continue to Boom

With the growing demand for farm products, agriculture in the United States and elsewhere is booming. This boom in agricultural products, like corn, soybeans, wheat, produce, milk and poultry, translates to big profits for farmers and many others in related industries, including food processing plants, trucking firms, railroads and even equipment makers.

Delphi, GM Reach Deal on Exit Financing

Delphi Corp. said Wednesday it reached an agreement with General Motors Corp. and investors for a new Chapter 11 reorganization plan that requires $5.2 billion in exit financing. A previous reorganization plan required $7.1 billion in exit financing. New terms can be achieved "during this challenging capital markets environment," Delphi Chief Restructuring Officer John Sheehan said Wednesday in a written statement.

3M to Acquire Bondo Corp.

3M has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire Bondo Corp., a manufacturer of auto body repair products for the automotive aftermarket and other professional and consumer applications. Bondo employs approximately 160 people at its operations in Atlanta, GA. The transaction is expected to close in the fourth quarter, subject to customary closing conditions. According to 3M, Bondo’s established brand complements 3M’s line of auto body repair products for the automotive aftermarket.

From Counterman.com: Why Buy Direct?

The phrase “buying direct” conjures up all sort of feelings in the aftermarket, both for repair shops and distributors. For me, those words bring to mind a primal desire to “cut out the middleman” and participate in the world of “deep discounts.” Wow, wouldn’t it be great to bump profit margins from resale parts from an average of 30 percent to more than 50 percent? Or wouldn’t it be even better to increase car count by undercutting our competitors by 10 percent on parts-intensive repairs like undercar or air conditioning services? The short answer is that if every small, independent automotive repair shop in the United States could “buy direct,” the playing field would be leveled and the service market would remain very much as it is now. But the question remains: Is there any advantage to buying direct?
