The ARA said it opposes the provision to make “Cash for Clunker” vehicles publicly available and states that a dangerous loophole in the bill is created by laws currently on the books in more than 35 states that allow the general public into salvage auctions to bid on salvaged or non-repairable vehicles.

Chrysler Says it Will End Leasing Next Week

Chrysler LLC will stop issuing new car and truck leases next week through its financial arm and instead turn its resources to financing loans for customers, it told surprised dealers Friday. This could mean car shoppers with less-than-perfect credit will have a harder time finding leases to acquire a Chrysler, Dodge or Jeep. But those who want to purchase a vehicle with a loan through Chrysler might get better deals. The decision comes as the value plummets for used vehicles — in particular trucks and SUVs — leaving manufacturers with vehicles with poor value at auction once the leases expire.

American Axle Strike Tips U.S. Nearer Recession as GM, Suppliers Idle Workers

At the beginning of this year, it seemed like Detroit’s great labor battles were over, after industry-changing deals at the Detroit automakers and the likes of parts giant Delphi Corp. But now, as the UAW strike against American Axle & Manufacturing moves through its second month with no end in sight — talks have been sparse with little progress made on key issues — the auto industry’s latest labor dispute has become about more than wage and benefit cuts for a few thousand workers.
