AAIA and ARPI File Lawsuit Over EPA Refrigerant Decision

Aside from the legal basis for the appeal, ARPI and AAIA say they believe strongly that HFO-1234yf is “a promising new tool in the fight against ozone-depletion and global warming,” and is safe for use by non-certified technicians and consumers servicing their vehicles.

EPA Finalizes Significant New Use Rule for Motor Vehicle Refrigerant

In a letter to the U.S. EPA earlier this year, the Automotive Service Association (ASA) expressed concern with the substitution of HFO-1234yf because it poses some risk to those persons handling the product, particularly non-professionals or do-it-yourself (DIY) consumers.

Under the agreement, DuPont and Honeywell will share financial and technological resources with the intent to jointly design, construct and operate a world-scale manufacturing facility for the new refrigerant, known as HFO-1234yf.

HFO-1234yf is a non Ozone Depleting Substance with a Global Warming Potential (GWP) of 4. In comparison, the current refrigerant, R-134a, has a GWP of 1430. Beginning in 2011, automakers will be required to use refrigerants with a global warming potential (GWP) below 150.
