Montgomery, Ala., Hosts Third Minority Automotive Supplier Expo

Representatives of U.S. automakers spent quality time with minority-owned companies last week in Montgomery, Ala., trading information on the business opportunities resulting from Alabama’s status as a hub of automotive manufacturing. The third annual Minority Automotive Supplier Showcase, presented by the Minority Business Participation Corp. at Alabama State University, was designed to connect automotive suppliers with representatives of Hyundai, Honda, Toyota and Mercedes.

Johnson Controls Threatens Layoffs If No New Business

Auto supplier Johnson Controls Inc. is seeking new business to prevent layoffs and avert a possible plant closure. Unless the situation changes soon, 81 people would be laid off Nov. 15, when the Battle Creek, Mich., plant goes from two shifts to one. The remaining 100 employees could lose their jobs by the end of the year if no new business is found.

American Tire Distributors Adds to Team of Equipment Specialists

American Tire Distributors has added to its team of equipment specialists with the recent hiring of Ralph Bachemin. Bachemin, who joined American Tire Distributors in January, handles automotive equipment sales and service for the company’s Mobile, Ala., distribution center, covering Southern regions of Louisiana, Alabama and Mississippi. Bachemin joins a network of approximately 45 equipment specialists employed by American Tire Distributors across the U.S. who assist dealers in establishing and maintaining a productive automotive services shop.

Mitchell 1 Names Regional Sales Manager for the Southeast

Mitchell 1 has named Jim Silverman regional sales manager (RSM) for the company’s southeast region, which covers Florida, Georgia, Tennessee, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Arkansas and South Carolina. Previously, Silverman served as an independent sales representative for Mitchell 1 in Nebraska and South Dakota for more than five years, during which time he earned the company’s top performer award in 1999, 2001 and 2003.

Automotive supplier Siemens VDO Automotive has named Atlanta, Ga.-based N.A. Williams Agency “Sales Agency of the Year” for 2003. N.A. Williams is responsible for Siemens VDO Automotive’s sales activities in the Southeast Region, including Virginia, South Carolina, North Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi and Tennessee. The N.A. Williams Agency, which was founded in 1934, specializes in the automotive aftermarket, serving a variety of major manufacturers. They have been a representative of Siemens VDO for the past six years.
