Distributors started disappearing from engines back in the late 1980s and early 1990s as the automakers began to phase in distributorless ignition systems (DIS) followed by coil-on-plug (COP) ignition systems. Today, the entire supply chain — from manufacturer to warehouse to store to installer — is interconnected through sophisticated store management software packages and systems that provide business information and controls that were not possible even two years ago.
