Northwood Auto Show Provides Electric, Fuel-Efficient Alternatives

Described by students as "a Prius on steroids," the rare electric Fisker Karma was on display at the show.

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – As gas prices continue to rise to an average of $3.76 per gallon, due largely in part to Iran’s threat to disrupt international oil trade, Northwood University students at the university’s West Palm Beach, Fla., campus recently unveiled the latest in electric and fuel-efficient vehicles, including the electric Fisker Karma sports car, the world’s first premium hybrid electric vehicle.

The showcase was presented as U.S. auto sales prepare for the second straight year of growth and included more than 250 new domestic and imported cars and recreational vehicles ranging from $10,000 to $400,000.

The event provided the opportunity for car enthusiasts everywhere to enjoy browsing without sales pressure and featured a variety of exotic, domestic and international cars, as well as classic models. The Auto Show Student Executive Board worked with more than 150 students to create the show, which attracted thousands of visitors.

According to an Associated Press article by Tom Krisher, U.S. auto sales are poised for their second straight year of growth after hitting a 30-year low in 2009. Growth is expected as a result of easier credit, low interest rates and pent-up demand for cars and trucks created by the most recent recession.
