The Michigan Fiscal Year 2013 Budget, which was signed into law by Gov. Rick Snyder (R) on June 26, extends a law that promotes the prioritized use of remanufactured parts in the state motor vehicle fleet through Sept. 30, 2013. The Motor & Equipment Remanufacturers Association (MERA) says it strongly supports the provision.

“We are pleased that the state of Michigan recognizes the environmental, economic and product performance benefits of remanufactured products by encouraging their use in the state fleet,” said John Chalifoux, president and COO, MERA. “MERA plans to promote the adoption of similar language in other key states, and also supports a Government Accountability Office (GAO) study of the use of remanufactured parts in the federal fleet.”

Section 270 of the budget states, “In order to reduce costs and maintain quality, it is the intent of the legislature that, excluding the fleet of motor vehicles for the department of state police, when economically feasible, the department of technology, management, and budget will prioritize the utilization of remanufactured parts as the primary means of maintenance and repair for the state of Michigan’s fleet of motor vehicles.”
