RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, NC — Hurricane Katrina has proved to be a dangerous and devastating storm – it has been called “the U.S. tsunami.” We have all been horror-struck at the scenes of devastation in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. Its wide path of destruction will cost billions of dollars.
The storm has disrupted lives, homes and businesses in the Gulf Coast states, particularly Mississippi, Louisiana and Alabama. Our own members have been affected – more than 126 MEMA member companies have facilities in the region, employing more than 18,000 people.
There are ways we can help, through our personal and business resources. MEMA has compiled a list of agencies assisting the recovery efforts, provided below.
We ask that you keep us informed of any contributions your business makes by sending an e-mail to [email protected]. MEMA is keeping a tally of the automotive supplier industry’s assistance in the wake of this terrible storm.
The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS)has activated its Homeland Security Information Network (HSIN) in an effort to expedite response efforts and save lives. Members can log on to the Homeland Security Information Network (HSIN) web portal (swern.gov; nwwarn.gov; ian.in.gov; and seern.gov) to access the National Emergency Resource Registry (NERR) by clicking on the link in the upper right corner of the page. Once registered, this resource allows HSIN-CI members as well as the general public to submit information about resources that may be used to support on-the-ground recovery efforts.
This is a secure, official U.S. government system to facilitate the marrying of capabilities and supplies with needs. At this time, the highest priority needs are for emergency supplies of non-perishable items that can be made available to Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama.
