The Motor & Equipment Remanufacturers Association (MERA) issued an urgent notice to members yesterday, asking for action to help stop Michigan House Bill 4344.
According to MERA, Michigan legislators may vote within the next 48 hours on HB 4344, which, should it pass, will prohibit the use of aftermarket and remanufactured parts to repair vehicles that are less than five years old.
MERA and the MEMA Washington Office sent a letter of opposition last week to all Michigan representatives and senators. In addition, the MEMA D.C. office called Governor Snyder’s office. However, Gov. Snyder’s office has not yet expressed whether he would veto the bill should it reach his desk.
MERA is asking for members to take immediate action: Email or call your local Michigan representatives and senators, where you live or have factories, and express your strong opposition to HB 4344. If you do not know your local district, or need contact information for your legislators, MERA is offering to assist with this information. Call 248-750-1280 or email [email protected].
The association also offered the following key talking points:
When contacting your elected officials, in addition to sharing with him or her how this would hurt your business, let them know how this bill would:
- Limit consumer choice in repair options
- Increase repair costs by mandating OEM parts
- Negatively impact aftermarket retail sales
- Hurt manufacturing jobs (be sure to let them know how many people you employ)
