RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, NC — The Motor & Equipment Manufacturers Association (MEMA) has selected Rep. Mike Rogers (R-Mich.) as the 2005 recipient of the “Joseph M. Magliochetti Industry Champion” award. Rogers will be honored during an award presentation on Thursday, June 9, at the MEMA Legislative Summit in Washington, D.C.

MEMA established the Industry Champion award in 2004 in the memory of Joseph M. Magliochetti, who served as the chairman and CEO of Dana Corp. until his death in 2003. The award celebrates and recognizes those who have worked diligently on behalf of automotive parts manufacturers in the United States. Sen. Lamar Alexander (R-Tenn.) and Rep. Joe Knollenberg (R-Mich.) were the first recipients.

“We are pleased to recognize Rep. Rogers who has been a strong advocate and a leading champion for our industry, lending us his ear and his support on a variety of critical policy issues,” said Bob McKenna, MEMA president and CEO. “We are extremely fortunate to have a member of Congress who has an intrinsic and deep understanding of the automotive supplier industry and who continues to invest his time in efforts that will contribute to a brighter future for our companies.

“Rep. Rogers has been a steadfast leader in the movement to alleviate the steel cost crisis, speaking out on behalf of automotive suppliers and providing support to the industry before Congress as well as before the International Trade Commission” McKenna added.

Rogers served as one of the original sponsors of the Stop Counterfeiting in Manufactured Goods Act of 2005. “He again proved to be a strong advocate on our members’ behalf, standing up for stronger intellectual property rights and trademark protections in the United States and around the world,” McKenna noted.

Rogers will also be the lead sponsor of the Intelligent Vehicle Technology legislation, slated for re-introduction in 2005. This measure, strongly supported by MEMA and its membership, will seek to accelerate the deployment of advanced vehicle safety technologies into the U.S. market and to help reduce the numbers of injuries and fatalities on the roads today.

“We are very pleased to honor the Congressman with this prestigious award in light of his continued commitment to our industry,” McKenna said. “During his tenure in Washington, D.C., Rep. Rogers has repeatedly demonstrated his dedication to the automotive supplier industry and to American manufacturers overall by serving as the community’s voice on multiple issues and helping to fight policies that would adversely affect U.S. companies and their employees. We look forward to presenting this award to him at our Washington, D.C., Summit on June 9.”
