STERLING HEIGHTS, Mich. IMPCO Automotive, a division of IMPCO Technologies Inc. and a subsidiary of Fuel Systems Solutions Inc., which is an OE supplier to General Motors, has notified the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) of a safety defect in IMPCO compressed natural gas (CNG) fuel systems installed as original equipment in certain
2011-’13 model year Chevrolet Express and GMC Savana vehicles.
Specifically, IMPCO determined that shut-off solenoids manufactured by an outside vendor and located in the underbody fuel system are susceptible to corrosion, which can lead to a short circuit and overheating, increasing the risk of a fire. A copy of IMPCO’s safety defect notice can be accessed here.
A joint IMPCO-GM quality investigation was prompted by an initial fleet report that an underbody solenoid overheated and melted. GM and IMPCO engineering personnel performed field surveys and component testing to determine the root cause. Based upon the findings from this investigation, IMPCO decided to take this action. No accidents or injuries have been reported.
GM and IMPCO are conducting a recall to notify dealers and owners of this condition and to arrange the necessary repairs. Repairs will be performed at no cost to owners. This recall affects approximately 1,800 vehicles.
