The National FFA was founded in 1928 as the “Future Farmers of America.” In 1988, the name of the organization was changed to The National FFA Organization to reflect the growing diversity of the agricultural industry. Today, membership exceeds 500,000 and the organization is part of agricultural-education programs at the middle and high-school levels throughout the United States. Every year, approximately $2 million in scholarship money is made available to National FFA members through the organization’s Scholarship Program with the help of companies like Luber-finer, which has been a sponsor of the National FFA and its Scholarship Program for more than 16 years now.

Mitchell was chosen as the recipient of the Luber-finer scholarship based on his 3.7 grade-point average, rank of 50th in his graduating class and his commitment to seeking a degree in an agriculture-based discipline. The selection process also took into account his FFA involvement, work experience, community service and leadership skills.
