DETROIT In the May 21 Federal Register, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) issued a request for public comments regarding guides for the rebuilt, reconditioned and other used automobile parts industry. MERA is working with MEMA to form a working group to provide comments on behalf of the motor vehicle parts remanufacturing industry.
The Used Auto Parts Guides seek to prevent unfair or deceptive acts or practices in the advertisement and sale (including installation) of previously used motor vehicle parts and assemblies of parts containing previously used parts (e.g., engines and transmissions).
In their current form, the Guides apply to ‘‘used parts and assemblies containing used parts designed for use in automobiles, trucks, motorcycles, tractors, or similar self-propelled vehicles whether or not such parts or assemblies have been reconstructed in any way.”
Comments must be received on or before Aug. 3, 2012. MERA and the MEMA DC office plan to host a conference call to review the notice and solicit member feedback in the coming weeks.
