INDIANAPOLIS — The Automotive Engine Rebuilder’s Association (AERA) has selected Clevite Engine Parts to be the official supplier of engine parts for its ethanol-fueled engine building competition. Dubbed the E85 Power Shootout, the competition will be held in conjunction with AERA’s RPM (Racing, Performance Engines, Machinery) Show to be held in Indianapolis Aug. 30 Sept. 1. Clevite Engine Parts will supply Clevite engine bearings, Perfect Circle piston rings and Victor Reinz gaskets to all competitors.
This engine building competition is actually a demonstration project to show the viability of ethanol-based fuels in automotive engine applications. E85 refers to a blend of 85 percent ethanol and 15 percent gasoline. Six teams will build engines based on existing domestic or import platforms. These engines will be dyno-tested during the AERA RPM Show, where horsepower, torque and fuel consumption will be measured. These parameters will be weighted against engine displacement, and a winner will be determined based on these factors.
“Clevite has a long history of engine parts development,” explains Ted Hughes, light duty brand manager for Clevite Engine Parts. “And while much of our engineering work is at the OE level, we have long worked with AERA and the engine remanufacturing industry to assure that vehicular engines work well during their “second life” after overhaul. The E85 Power Shootout will not only demonstrate the viability of ethanol-based fuels, but will also show that our replacement engine bearings, piston rings, and gaskets perform well in a variety of engine configurations, and with a variety of fuels and combustion environments.”
In addition to being an exhibitor at the RPM Show and Official Engine Parts Supplier for the E85 Power Shootout, Clevite will also sponsor famed drag racer Shirley Muldowney, who will be a keynote speaker and will also be available for interviews and brief individual discussions on the show floor.
