BIG R Show Features Seminars From RIT’s Reman Center

The Rochester Institute of Technology's (RIT) National Center for Remanufacturing and Resource Recovery will present three training seminars during the Automotive Parts Remanufacturers Association's (APRA) International BIG R Show in Las Vegas Nov. 2-4, 2013.

CHANTILLY, Va. – The Rochester Institute of Technology’s (RIT) National Center for Remanufacturing and Resource Recovery will present three training seminars during the Automotive Parts Remanufacturers Association’s (APRA) International BIG R Show in Las Vegas Nov. 2-4, 2013.

From 3-4:30 p.m. on Nov. 2, Eugene Park, assistant director of technical programs, New York State Pollution Prevention Institute at RIT, will present a seminar on "Advanced Cleaning Techniques." Cleaning is a unique process in remanufacturing. The types of contaminates that need to be removed are oil, advanced lubricants, carbon, scale, sand and dirt, and rust. The current challenges for cleaning remanufactured automotive components are the need to reduce cleaning costs, the increased number of electric and electromechanical components, the new materials and composites that are being incorporated into new designs, and the need to meet all the new federal and state environmental regulations. This presentation will discuss new, advanced cleaning processes for remanufacturing that can 1) potentially reduce cleaning costs without sacrificing quality, 2) meet federal and state environmental regulations, and 3) clean electronic components and the new advanced materials and composites.

From 3:30-4:45 p.m. on Nov. 3, Mike Haselkorn, research faculty at the Golisano Institute for Sustainability at RIT, will talk about "Opportunities for Remanufacturers." Automotive technology is rapidly changing. New materials and electronics are being incorporated into the designs. In addition, hybrids are increasing in popularity. Will natural gas or fuel cell powered cars be next? This seminar will provide an overview of future vehicle trends and how these trends will result in new opportunities for remanufacturers. Haselkorn also will discuss and give examples of conventional and new remanufacturing processes and how they can be applied to vehicle parts remanufacturing. In addition, the importance of being able to understand the condition of components that are being remanufactured will be discussed.

From 11:15 a.m. – 12:15 p.m. on Nov. 4, Haselkorn will present a seminar on "Non-destructive Inspection Technologies." The recovery of valuable components from failed products is the lifeblood of a remanufacturer. In today’s competitive market, companies must take advantage of any technologies that can ensure greater recovery opportunities and enhanced quality of the final product. The ability to identify critical failures, without destroying the components, is a requirement for all remanufacturers. This seminar will be an overview of the various non-destructive inspection technologies and their applications.
