Gates Corp.’s Barricade Fuel Line Hose Receives 2012 EPA Certification

The low-permeation fuel hose that prevents vapor loss and withstands aggressive fuel blends is now 2012 certified by EPA.

DENVER — The Automotive Aftermarket unit of Gates Corp. has announced United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) certification of its Barricade Fuel Line Hose, including fuel injection hose and carburetion hose.

"Being able to read the lay line and see that a hose is both EPA and CARB certified provides our customers the confidence that Barricade is compliant with all regulations, and helps protect the environment," said Dave Miller, vice president of marketing, Automotive Aftermarket at Gates Corp.

Gates says it developed Barricade hose to withstand aggressive fuel blends and significantly reduce fuel permeation utilizing its patent-pending GreenShield barrier layer technology and inner tube of synthetic rubber compounds.

Barricade hose was previously certified by the State of California Air Resources Board (CARB), a key player in the establishment of fuel line standards. To achieve approval, Gates Barricade hose completed an extensive certification process for evaporative emission system components designed to control gasoline emissions from small off-road engines.

Third-party SAE J1737 fuel permeation tests conducted by Akron Rubber Development Labs showed Barricade at a permeation level of 1 gram per square meter per day, significantly under the CARB maximum allowable fuel permeation limit of 15 grams per square meter per day. The CARB Executive Order Certification Number of Q-09-019A is indicated on the Barricade hose lay line.

Following its CARB certification, Barricade fuel line hose underwent in-house testing at Gates to meet federal requirements established by the EPA. Gates conducted a seven-week test at 23 degrees Celsius using an industry standard fuel blend and submitted data to the EPA’s engine and vehicle compliance information system, known as Verify. The system collects emissions and fuel economy compliance information for all types of engines, vehicles and equipment used in transportation. Once Barricade was approved, it received an EPA certificate of approval.

All Barricade hose manufactured in 2012 will be printed with a new EPA Family Name on the lay line CGTSPLINEBF1 for Fuel Injection Hose and CGTSPLINEBG1 for Carburetion Hose in addition to the CARB Executive Order Certification Number.

In October of 2011, Gates Barricade Fuel Injection Hose was named a 2012 Automotive News PACE Award finalist in the Product Innovations category. The 18th annual PACE Award winners will be announced on April 23, 2012 during SAE World Congress week in Detroit.

In conjunction with its certification, Gates has extended a Barricade promotional offer. Through March 31, automotive part retailers can receive a free rack (Gates Part No. 91187) or a $25 gift card with the purchase of three 25′ reels of Barricade Fuel Injection Hose.
