ITW Acquires the Car Care Business of Shell Subsidiary SOPUS Products

The sale of SOPUS Products' Car Care business to ITW includes such well-known brands as Rain-X, Black Magic and Gumout, among others.

GLENVIEW, Ill. — Illinois Tool Works Inc. (ITW) has finalized its acquisition of SOPUS Products’ Car Care business, a leading automotive aftermarket consumer products portfolio, in a deal that was first announced in early December 2010.

SOPUS is a subsidiary of Shell Oil Co. The division includes the appearance and performance chemical and windshield wiper blade brands of Pennzoil-Quaker State Co. (dba SOPUS Products). Terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

SOPUS first announced in May 2010 that it was exploring the sale of its Car Care portfolio, which also included the sale of its Auto Expressions business to Kraco Enterprises.

The sale of SOPUS Products’ Car Care business to ITW includes such well-known brands as Rain-X, Black Magic and Gumout, among others. The portfolio offers vehicle owners a comprehensive range of products for improving windshield visibility, protecting and cleaning vehicles and improving vehicle performance. The division’s 2010 revenues were approximately $300 million.

"We believe this portfolio of car care products complements and augments our existing automotive aftermarket platform, which includes Permatex, Wynn’s and Slime," said David Parry, ITW vice chairman. "With this acquisition, ITW is well positioned to continue to expand its car care solutions for customers around the world."
