JASPER, Ind. — The National Association for Pupil Transport (NAPT) in partnership with Jasper Engines and Transmissions will shine the spotlight on school bus maintenance this week, when top school bus technicians and inspectors from across the country compete to become America’s Best Technician or America’s Best Inspector.

The competition, hosted by Jasper Engines and Transmissions at the company’s Jasper, Ind., facility, began yesterday and concludes Oct. 1.

"School bus maintenance is critical to the education system across the country. School bus technicians and inspectors all over America take great pride in the roles they play to ensure the safety of school children. Each year we look forward to meeting some of the best school bus technicians and inspectors this country has to offer,” said Marshall Casey, America’s Best coordinator.

America’s Best hopefuls will participate in two separate competitions: one for technical diagnostic skills and one for vehicle inspections skills. Each of these individual competitions will include a written examination and multiple "hands-on" components.

The exam will cover technical aspects of various school bus components, including electrical systems, brakes, engines, suspensions, drive trains and body systems. All topics will be relative to actual school bus applications. The examinations will be administered by the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE).

During the second portion of the competition, technicians must demonstrate their ability to diagnose, troubleshoot and repair various mechanical components found on school buses. Inspectors will rotate through three stations requiring them to examine all vehicle components and systems to identify defects.

"Jasper Engines & Transmissions is pleased to have been chosen to host the 2010 America’s Best competition,” said Fred Ernst, JASPER Diesel marketing manager. “This gives us the opportunity to show our support for the NAPT organization and for their primary mission, which is the safety of the students they transport. JASPER is honored to have been asked to be a part of that mission."

"Over the years, the America’s Best Training and Skills Challenge has been successful in raising awareness for school bus maintenance and safety," said NAPT Past-President Bill Tousley. "Not only does the competition help technicians share and learn best practices, but the information provided is valuable for continuous improvement and learning. We’re delighted to be holding the 2010 competition in Jasper.”
