The Cevallos Award is named after Dr. F. Javier Cevallos, president of Kutztown University, for his commitment to children’s environmental health issues. The award is not an annual award, but only bestowed upon those that the board of directors of the Institute would like to recognize for their exceptional accomplishments in making clear improvements in advancing the health of children by protecting them from environmental harms.

East Penn’s long-standing history of environmental protection and dedication to sustainability practices have led to achievements such as, a significant reduction in air emissions even with a substantial increase in production, a zero discharge wastewater treatment process, a patented system for the reclamation/reuse of sulfuric acid, third party certification to ISO14001:2004 Environmental Management System standards, Battery Recycling Center/Metals Division’s STAR status in the OSHA Voluntary Protection Program and the Governor’s Award for Environmental Excellence. These accomplishments, along with the company’s support to the Institute, the community and specifically the commitment to children’s environmental health, were all factors in the Institutes selection and recognition of East Penn for the 2009 Cevallos Award.
