RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, NC — The Filter Manufacturers Council (FMC) was honored with a “Recycler of the Year” award by the Steel Manufacturers Association (SMA), at the association’s Annual Members Conference Luncheon on May 12 in Washington, D.C.
Founded in 1971, FMC is a product group of the Motor & Equipment Manufacturers Association (MEMA). The group represents manufacturers of vehicular and industrial filtration products.
FMC was recognized for its contributions to the electric arc furnace iron, the steel industry and the environment through the promotion of the recycling of used oil filters, and for its work to eliminate lead-terne plating in the manufacture of new oil filters. The results of FMC’s efforts can be seen in the continued increase in recycling rates of used oil filters, the SMA noted.
“The successful filter recycling program is proof positive that industry collaboration often is more effective than government regulation,” said Brent Hazelett, FMC executive director.
SMA is the primary trade association for EAF steel makers, often referred to as minimills. Its membership accounts for more than half of total U.S. steel production. In addition, SMA member companies are the nation’s largest recyclers, reclaiming more than 50 million tons of steel scrap last year.
