BEDFORD, IN — Visteon Corp. and union leaders were to resume talks Tuesday to try to end a 10-day strike by 1,026 workers at an Indiana factory, the union said.

Management at the Bedford, Ind., plant requested a return to the bargaining table for the first talks since the walkout began, International Union of Electrical Workers-Communications Workers of America Local 907 said on its Web site.

Union spokeswoman Lauren Asplen declined to comment on the negotiations. Visteon spokeswoman Tammera Hallums didn’t respond to phone messages seeking comment.

The local’s members walked out after rejecting a tentative contract reached with the Dearborn-based company last month. The union has said Visteon plans to cut 600 jobs at the factory. Visteon has used temporary workers to maintain production of fuel systems and other parts.

Visteon has cut jobs and shed businesses in a bid to end three years of losses after being spun off by Ford Motor Co. in 2000. Work is being shipped from Bedford to the Rawsonville plant, said Ralph Mayer, president of UAW Local 898, which represents workers at the Michigan factory. Local 898 reached a new contract last month. Mayer said company negotiators told their UAW counterparts that before the settlement, Visteon planned to transfer the work to plants in Mexico.
