WASHINGTON — A Congressional hearing for the Motor Vehicle Owners’ Right to Repair Act, H.R. 2735, has been set for Wednesday, Sept. 22 at 2 p.m. in Washington, D.C. The hearing will take place before the House Subcommittee on Commerce, Trade and Consumer Protection of the House Energy and Commerce Committee.
The Right to Repair Act, a top priority for the Automotive Aftermarket Industry Association (AAIA), is about the right of motorists to choose where, how and by whom to have their vehicles maintained and repaired. It ensures that all vehicle owners and independent auto service centers have access to the information necessary to diagnose and repair vehicles at an affordable cost.
In addition to AAIA, other consumer and small business groups such as the American Automobile Association (AAA), National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB), Consumers Union, Automotive Oil Change Association and Service Station Dealers of America (SSDA) have endorsed the Right to Repair Act.
In the House of Representatives, House Energy and Commerce Committee chairman Joe Barton, R-Texas and Rep. Edolphus Towns, D-N.Y. introduced the measure, which now has 113 sponsors. Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C. introduced a Senate companion bill, S. 2138, which has 10 cosponsors.
