DETROIT — Detroit-based Spectrum Composites has introduced a new Tire Inflation Positioning Switch (TIPS), billed by the company as a “state-of-the-art, sensor-triggering Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) tool for tires.”
The company describes TIPS as a tool that re-programs a vehicle’s computer each time the wheel position changes (each tire rotation).
Technicians can use TIPS as a diagnostic tool, to ensure TPM sensors are functioning. In other words, they can test the tire sensor prior to removing the wheel, thus avoiding having to replace a defective sensor. With TIPS, service establishments don’t need to buy multiple TPMS initiation tools, Spectrum said.
The patented TIPS tool triggers all known magnetic and frequency sensors (continuous wave, modulated wave, magnetic wave) that have been installed at the factory by OEMs. Most automakers have selected a direct approach, incorporating wheel-based sensor transmitters, according to Spectrum.
TIPS was originally developed by G-5 Electronics, a Detroit-based think-tank consisting of automotive engineers. Its sister company, Spectrum, has developed diagnostic workstations for General Motors, Ford, Chrysler, Toyota and others.
