WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Motor & Equipment Manufacturers Association (MEMA) will honor Rep. John Dingell (D-Mich.) as the 2008 recipient of the "Joseph M. Magliochetti Industry Champion" award. The award will be presented during MEMA’s annual Legislative Summit in Washington, D.C. on June 11.

MEMA established the Industry Champion award in 2004 in the memory of Joseph M. Magliochetti, who served as the chairman and CEO of Dana Corp. until his death in 2003. The award was designed to recognize lawmakers who have shown leadership and initiative on issues impacting automotive and heavy duty suppliers.

"As the longest-serving member of the House and the Chairman of the Energy and Commerce Committee, Dingell has consistently been a strong advocate for the suppliers in his district and the industry as a whole, said Bob McKenna, MEMA president and CEO.

McKenna specifically noted Dingell’s advocacy for the supplier industry in the recent debate over fuel economy. His diligence resulted in provisions in the Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007 that will assist the supplier industry in developing technology to meet the new standard. McKenna also cited his strong support of the Manufacturing Extension Partnership as well as his leadership in passing the Cameron Gulbransen Kids and Cars Safety Act of 2007.

"Mr. Dingell oversees issues that are critical to our members," McKenna continued. "He and his staff consistently reach out to suppliers and have a firm understanding of the importance of the industry to Michigan’s economy and that of the nation. We are very proud to present this award to such a worthy recipient."
