Goodyear Plant to Shut Down for 16 Days

From the Gadsden Times

Goodyear’s Gadsden, Ala., plant will be shutting down production of tires for 16 days beginning Aug. 16, and four other Goodyear consumer tire plants also are reducing tire production, the company said Wednesday.

Goodyear Gadsden Communications Manager Jackie Brehm Edmondson said the Goodyear plant will shut down at 1 p.m. Aug. 16 and reopen at 7 a.m. Sept. 2 for an "inventory adjustment." She said the plant already planned to close for Labor Day, which is Sept. 1.

"Goodyear is reducing production levels at several of its North American consumer tire plants to align with industry demand and responsible inventory targets," Edmondson said.

She said the reductions will be achieved by a combination of reduced daily production levels and temporary shutdowns in some facilities.

"The North American tire industry continues to experience weakness in the original equipment sector as well as certain segments of the replacement tire business," Edmondson said. "It is necessary to align production levels with industry demand.

"We are reducing our production level by temporarily ceasing tire production," Edmondson said, adding that the Gadsden plant is not reducing its daily tire production levels at this time.

The company plans to reduce consumer tire production in North America by 8 million tires this year, Edmondson said. Edmondson said other plants that produce consumer tires for Goodyear and also will be affected are Lawton, Okla.; Fayetteville, N.C.; Union City, Tenn.; and Napanee, Ont.
