Sensata Technologies Sets New Emissions Reduction Goal

Sensata's goal is to reduce its Scope 1 and 2 market-based emissions by 45% by 2030.

Sensata Technologies has announced a new environmental goal to reduce its Scope 1 and 2 market-based emissions by 45% by 2030, using its 2021 figures as a baseline. This target is part of Sensata’s broader strategy to achieve carbon neutrality in its operations by 2050.

According to Sensata’s 2022 Sustainability Report, the company has identified energy and emissions as key material topics, along with diversity, equity and inclusion and responsible sourcing. The new emissions reduction goal aligns with the objectives of the Paris Agreement to limit the global temperature increase to 1.5°C (approx. 34 °F) above pre-industrial levels.

In 2021, Sensata set a target to reach carbon neutrality by 2050 and aimed to reduce its Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions intensity per $1 million in revenue by 10% by 2026 from a 2021 baseline. The company has already surpassed this target, achieving a 10.7% reduction in emissions intensity in 2022. Sensata also anticipates exceeding its 2023 goal of reducing Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions intensity by 5% compared to 2022.

Jeff Cote, CEO and president of Sensata Technologies, emphasized the company’s response to market demands for electrification solutions. “We are making consistent progress with annual reductions in market-based emissions, and we are supporting customers that have set their own goals to reduce emissions in their supply chains. However, we recognize the need to do more – and our new goal for 45% absolute emissions reduction in Scope 1 and 2 market-based emissions by 2030 reflects our continued commitment for a more sustainable future,” Cote said.

To reach its long-term carbon neutrality goal, Sensata has developed a renewable energy roadmap. This includes initiatives to enhance energy efficiency and reduce GHG emissions. About 90% of the company’s total energy consumption occurs at its manufacturing facilities. Sensata is integrating renewable energy sources, with locations like its Attleboro headquarters, Engineering Center in Hengelo, Netherlands, and facilities in Antrim, Northern Ireland, using 100% renewable electricity from local utilities. In 2023, Sensata completed solar panel projects in Plovdiv, Bulgaria, and Malaysia, with plans for additional installations in Malaysia and Botevgrad, Bulgaria in 2024, the company said.

Sensata’s Energy Efficiency Playbook is evaluating further opportunities, such as LED lighting upgrades, HVAC system improvements and partnering with energy providers for renewable energy supply. In addition to these internal efforts, Sensata is focusing on supplier engagement in sustainability. The company launched two supplier sustainability surveys in 2023 – a Recycled Content Survey and a Climate Change Survey – to involve suppliers in reducing upstream greenhouse gas emissions.
