Plews & Edelmann, a manufacturer specializing in power steering solutions, has introduced an aftermarket manufactured replacement rack and pinion units incorporating General Motors’ Magnasteer technology. These new Edelmann Elite racks are designed for select late-model GM vehicles, providing auto repair professionals with an alternative for replacing Magnasteer systems.
Magnasteer, a technology that combines hydraulic power steering with electronically controlled magnetic forces to adjust steering effort, was first introduced by GM in 1997 on specific Oldsmobile models. This technology, while enhancing steering performance, has presented challenges in remanufacturing due to its precise tolerances. With GM ceasing the supply of service units, there has been a lack of equivalent aftermarket options until this launch, the company said.
One of the primary challenges in remanufacturing Magnasteer racks has been the inaccessibility of the magnetic coils, sealed within the housing, leading to failures in power assist at low speeds. In contrast, the new Edelmann Elite racks feature newly engineered coils to ensure consistent performance with Magnasteer technology, Plews & Edelman said. Each unit is also equipped with the Edelmann Elite unique Designated Numeric Asset (DNA) for traceability and assurance of performance.
The addition of the Magnasteer program to the Edelmann Elite line extends the company’s coverage to an additional 1.6 million domestic and import vehicles. Alongside its comprehensive range of power steering hoses, pumps, coolers and filters, Plews & Edelmann aims to provide auto repair shops with a complete solution for power steering repairs.
