Continental Invests In Its Lancaster County Headquarters

A new 88,000-square-foot building will be constructed next to the existing headquarters.

Recently, Continental confirmed its continued commitment to its tire operations in the Americas, announcing the addition of a new building to its Lancaster County, South Carolina, headquarters campus, which supports operations of its tire business across North and South America.

To accommodate all employees in the area, a new 88,000-square-foot building will be constructed next to the existing headquarters located at 1830 MacMillan Park Drive. The new space will seat up to 400 of its current employees based in the area and will include ample meeting and collaboration space for campus employees.

“Lancaster County has been home to our tire operations for the Americas Region since 2009. We are excited to invest in our campus and bring our team together in a new, fresh space that includes modern features and design to support the future work environment,” said Dr. Jochen Etzel, chief executive officer of Continental Tire the Americas.

Continental’s existing headquarters is approximately 91,000 square feet, which includes a 16,000 square-foot addition constructed in 2012 to support its growing workforce. Since the addition, Continental has continued to expand its workforce, which has been dispersed across multiple facilities in the area. This newest addition, a more than $20 million investment, is expected to be completed mid-2022, and will enable Continental to consolidate its footprint, while at the same time provide the space needed to support the continuous growth of its operations.

“Continental Tire the Americas’ headquarters expansion is a huge win for Lancaster County. Continental is an international leader in the automotive industry and this incredible project could have located anywhere in the region or multiple states, but Continental chose to remain and grow here. Their long-term commitment to Lancaster County speaks volumes about the outstanding business climate, professional workforce, strategic location and excellent quality of life that makes our community such a compelling headquarters location,” said Lancaster County Department of Economic Development Executive Director Jamie Gilbert.

Continental’s Tire business area has demonstrated an ongoing commitment to sustainability, which is an integral part of its “Vision 2030” and anticipates including sustainability features in the expansion, such as a photovoltaic solar array on the roof to support the facility’s energy needs. The new space will also provide an attractive work environment focused on openness and networking, agility and flexibility, and the ability to leverage technology to enable remote collaboration for dispersed teams.

“We celebrate Continental’s decision to invest $20 million into Lancaster County. Existing businesses like Continental continue to invest in South Carolina, and that shows the strength of our business-friendly climate and strong workforce. Announcements like today’s indicate we’re on the right track with our economic development efforts,” said Gov. Henry McMaster.

The company plans to share additional details about the expansion of its headquarters after construction begins in 2021.
