Federal-Mogul Earns 2014 Automotive News PACE Award

Company's lead-free engine bearings offer environmentally friendly solutions to vehicle manufacturers.

SOUTHFIELD, Mich. – Federal-Mogul‘s Powertrain segment was the recipient of a 2014 Automotive News PACE Award at a ceremony held April 7 in Detroit. The award recognizes automotive suppliers for superior innovation, technological advancement and business performance.

The company’s lead-free engine bearings were recognized in the product category, which highlights innovations in new products, components or systems that have significant market impact and act as "game changers" in the automotive industry.

"The PACE Award process recognizes innovation, which is the foundation of our business – providing innovative powertrain solutions for our customers," said Gian Maria Olivetti, vice president, technology and innovation, Federal-Mogul Powertrain. "We are extremely honored to receive this prestigious award, as it demonstrates the great pride we take in our products and technologies."

Federal-Mogul was among the first to offer a comprehensive portfolio of lead-free bearing products, driven by legislative mandates in Europe in 2008. To replace lead as an alloying element in sliding engine bearings, Federal-Mogul engineers were successful in developing a portfolio of materials based on significantly different tribological and physical properties, which are effective for gasoline and diesel engines for both main and connecting rod bearing applications and under a broad range of load cycles.

Federal-Mogul has had a successful history with PACE, and has been the recipient of 13 awards since 2003. The company received two PACE awards in 2013 for its IROX Engine Bearings and High Modulus Bonded Piston Technology; an award in 2012 for its Two-Dimensional Ultrasonic Testing for Raised Gallery Pistons; two awards in 2011 for its EcoTough-coated piston and LKZ oil control ring and three awards in 2010 for its DuraBowl piston reinforcement process; High Precision Electro-Erosion Machining (HPEEM) manufacturing process; and Bayonet Connection System for profile wiper blades. The company also was honored with PACE Awards for its High-Temperature Alloy (HTA) gaskets and Goetze Diamond Coating (GDC) for piston rings in 2007; for its Monosteel diesel piston in 2006; and for its Wagner ThermoQuiet brake pads and shoes in 2003.

The 20th annual PACE (Premier Automotive Suppliers’ Contribution to Excellence) Award was presented by Automotive News, Ernst & Young LLP and Transportation Research Center Inc. (TRC Inc.).  The competition was open to suppliers who contribute products, processes, materials or services directly to the manufacture of cars or trucks.
