VIDEO FEATURE: Self-Driving Robotic Cars: Science Fiction or Reality?

DETROIT — At the 2008 International Consumer Electronics Show this week, General Motors showcased an experimental sport-utility vehicle capable of driving and navigating on its own – without a driver or even a remote-control. Developed by a team from Carnegie Mellon University, the Chevrolet Tahoe Boss has cameras, sensors and radar and navigation technology. It can brake and accelerate on its own, avoid accidents and even spot congestion.

Initially developed with the military in mind, the new autonomous driving technology can potentially help save lives on the battlefield, and even on the highways, as it becomes available for commercial use in the not-too-distant future.
