MADISON, MISS — Workers at Tower Automotive in Madison, Miss., voted 162-18 against joining the United Steelworkers of America.
Tower is a major supplier for Nissan’s new automotive plant in nearby Canton, Miss.
Several Tower workers contacted the Steelworkers last winter, hoping the union could help plant employees negotiate better wages and hours.
Tower employees, who make 650 vehicle frames daily and often work 60-hour weeks, start at $9.75 per hour with a 20-cent differential for working night shifts. By comparison, Nissan workers start at more than $13 per hour.
