The Auto Evolution Is On Display At CES 2016

While the Las Vegas-based show officially runs from Jan. 6-9, news has been coming in since Monday. We’re here to recap some of the names that are making potentially big waves in our industry, including updates from Ford, Kia, Nvidia, GM and more.

CES 2016 - LogoEvery year, the best of the best in technology is highlighted in the Consumer Electronics Show (CES), and today, we’re here to recap some of the names that are making potential big waves in our industry. While the Las Vegas-based show officially runs from Jan. 6-9, news has been coming in since Monday (Jan. 4).

One of the most notable items making a buzz is the news about Ford and its work with autonomous cars. While it had been rumored that the company was going to work with Google, the partnership wasn’t in the cards for CES 2016. Instead, they brought out a surprise alliance with Amazon, using the Amazon Echo to continue integrating your car and home. “Alexa,” as the the interface is called, will potentially be able to open your garage door or turn on the heat in your home through a press of a button on your steering wheel.

Ford also says it is tripling its fleet of autonomous cars on the road (with up to 30 being active), and equipping the fleet with a LiDAR sensor developed by Silicon Valley-based Velodyne Inc. This, the company says, will increase the real-time mapping of the driverless cars to 200 meters, from a small puck-sized sensor that is small enough to be mounted on the mirrors of cars. CarPlay and Android Auto also are notably being added to all 2017 Ford models, and 2016 models will be allowed to opt in.

Of course, the U.S.-based automaker isn’t the only company to make announcements during the event. Here are some other snapshots from the show floor:

  • Kia launched its “Drive Wise” system, which is its version of autonomous driving technology. With it, the company claims it will have partially autonomous cars on the road by 2020, and fully autonomous cars on the road by 2030. The company also has been granted a license to test self-driving cars in Nevada.
  • Volvo has partnered with the Swedish telecom provider Ericsson to build smarter streaming technologies in autonomous cars. Users will able to stream infotainment even while no signal is available, the company says.
  • Similar to the announcement that Ford made about its new smartphone integration system, Fiat Chrysler will bring CarPlay (iPhone) and Android Auto (Android) to its updated UConnect infotainment systems this year.
  • Volkswagen showcased the BUDD-e Concept microbus, which is based on the company’s new Modular Electric Platform for plug-in vehicles.
  • BMW unveiled its “Vision Car,” which the company hails as what the future of the user interface might look like. The car also takes AirTouch for a spin, a new contactless gesture control system.
  • Nvidia, one of the most prominent names in the computing world, has announced the Drive PX2, the supercomputer for autonomous cars. According to the company’s press release, “DRIVE PX 2’s deep learning capabilities enable it to quickly learn how to address the challenges of everyday driving, such as unexpected road debris, erratic drivers and construction zones.” The company also noted that it was partnering with Volvo with its newest technology.
  • Harman is bringing Microsoft Office to “infotainment” availability, though there are no details as to when this will be available. The company claims you can easily schedule meetings, reply to emails and work on presentations from your car’s interface.
  • The Chevy Bolt, GM’s electric car, turned some heads with its debut, priced potentially as low as $30,000 (after federal tax credit) and available late 2016. The company says it is able to drive about 200 miles, and fully charges in 9 hours. The company also noted it could be using cameras on its cars to build mapping data in the near future for autonomous cars.
  • Delphi continued to show off advancements in “Vehicle to Everything” (V2E) technology, following last year’s drive from San Francisco to New York.

Hyundai has introduced an augmented reality application for smartphones called Virtual Guide. With this app in hand, the company says it will walk users through standard maintenance and anything else included in the owner’s manual.
