Spectra Premium Opens New Fuel Tank Facility In Trollhättan, Sweden

The new operation allows Spectra Premium to improve the scale of its technology in Europe by introducing advanced manufacturing from its Boucherville, Canada, operation while accelerating future technology through the integration of its research and development center in Trollhättan.

Spectra Premium has announced the opening of a new fuel tank manufacturing and R&D facility in Trollhättan, Sweden. The company has installed state-of-the-art production equipment for the advanced manufacturing of lightweight stainless-steel fuel tank systems. This move completes the integration of the previously announced acquisition of TechROi Fuel Systems as well as the official company name change to Spectra Premium AB.

Spectra says the new 7,000-square-meter facility positions the company as a global leader in the development and manufacturing of fuel systems for hybrid and plug-in hybrid vehicles. The new operation allows Spectra Premium to improve the scale of its technology in Europe by introducing advanced manufacturing from its Boucherville, Canada, operation while accelerating future technology through the integration of its research and development center in Trollhättan.

“We are very pleased to celebrate the opening of this new facility in Sweden, which allows us to better serve our European customers,” said Jacques Mombleau, president and CEO of Spectra Premium Industries Inc. “With this facility, we can meet market needs through advanced manufacturing and increased production capacity while improving the technical benefits of lightweight stainless-steel fuel tanks. We are excited about the potential this operation will bring to Europe where our product can meet increasingly stringent emissions regulations and support the growth of the plug-in hybrid vehicle market.”

Stainless steel offers automakers many important advantages in the development of their vehicles when compared to plastic or mild steel alternatives. Fuel tanks made of stainless steel can achieve lighter weight than plastic with a globally available, sustainable material that is recycled through a long-standing network of recycling businesses.

“We believe that stainless steel is a material choice all OEMs should consider in the development of their vehicles, whether plug-in hybrid, hybrid or conventional internal combustion engines (ICEs). By leveraging the benefits, automakers can improve performance while providing the consumer with a sustainable material. The perceived disadvantages of metal fuel tanks have been eliminated through advances in stainless steel during the recent years,” added Mark Church, vice president of OEM business development at Spectra Premium.
