Shorter Taxi Lines at the SEMA Show

The Nevada Taxicab Authority recently lifted its regulation that allowed only those cabs without geographic restrictions to pick up passengers from the Las Vegas Convention Center. Under the old rule, taxicabs with geographic restrictions could take passengers to the Convention Center, however, could not pick up passengers. Convention Center attendees were often frustrated as taxicabs dropped off passenger and watched as the cab drove off with no passenger at all, while the taxi lines grew increasingly longer.

LAS VEGAS — The Nevada Taxicab Authority recently lifted its regulation that allowed only those cabs without geographic restrictions to pick up passengers from the Las Vegas Convention Center.

Geographic restrictions are in place to help ensure that taxicabs don’t congregate at typically high-fare tourist spots, leaving other parts of the city, mainly residential areas, without sufficient service.

According to Investigator Rob Stewart, public information officer for the Nevada Taxicab Authority, the decision by the Nevada Taxicab Authority to lift the restriction was unanimous, and geographic restrictions were also lifted for the Sands Expo Center.

“As of June 1, any Las Vegas taxicab is able to pick up at either convention center,” stated Stewart. “Hopefully, this will make the wait for a taxi shorter and a little more bearable.”
