A car of average age today needs more metal protection for its engine than it can get from standard motor oil. That’s because the average age of U.S. vehicles is currently 11.5 years old, according to research firm IHS Automotive, and all vehicles of that age and older need more zinc and phosphorous than current engine oils contain.
