THIS JUST IN: Dana Emerges from Chapter 11; Former GM Exec John Devine Named Executive Chairman and CEO

Dana Holding Corp. is today emerging from Chapter 11 reorganization as a new company positioned to compete vigorously in the global automotive, commercial vehicle and off-highway markets. In conjunction with emergence, Dana’s new Board of Directors has elected John Devine executive chairman and acting CEO. Devine is the former vice chairman and chief financial officer of General Motors Corp., where he served from 2001 to mid-2006. Prior to joining GM, Devine served as chairman and chief executive officer of Fluid Ventures, LLC. Previously, he spent 32 years at Ford Motor Co., where he last served as executive vice president and chief financial officer. Devine is also a board member of Amerigon Inc.

Bridgestone/Firestone’s Gamauf to Retire

Bridgestone/Firestone North American Tire (BFNAT) announced that John Gamauf, president of consumer replacement tire sales; vice president of BFNAT; and member of the board of directors of BFNAT, has elected to retire effective May 1. Succeeding Gamauf will be John Baratta, the company’s current vice president of North American consumer tires sales. Baratta’s successor will be named at a later date. Gamauf will continue to serve on BFNAT’s board.

Conventional wisdom in automotive circles not long ago held that Toyota Motor Corp. would flash past General Motors Corp. like a blur to become the global sales leader, perhaps in 2006 and certainly by 2007, as Toyota marched relentlessly toward world domination. GM defied that wisdom Wednesday, remaining No. 1 and holding Toyota off by about 3,000 vehicles in 2007 by reporting worldwide sales of 9,369,524 cars and trucks, up 3 percent from a year ago, and serving notice that it intends to keep battling for the sales crown in years to come.

Pep Boys CFO Harry Yanowitz Resigns

Pep Boys has announced the planned departure of Chief Financial Officer (CFO) Harry Yanowitz, who has resigned in order to pursue other business interests. Yanowitz was appointed CFO in 2004. Prior to that he served as senior vice president, Strategy & Business Development, and previously served as CFO of a public company. Yanowitz will continue in his duties until the company’s financial statements for fiscal 2007 are completed and will assist the company in its search for his replacement.

The Automotive Service Association (ASA) has announced that its 2008 annual convention will be held May 1-3 at the Hyatt Regency in Santa Clara, CA. The agenda will include the ASA board of directors meeting; a State of the Association address by Ron Pyle, ASA president and chief staff executive; an affiliate assembly meeting and ASA’s annual Celebration of Excellence awards ceremony. Celebration of Excellence will again host the Automotive Management Institute (AMI) graduation ceremony.

ITW Permatex Acquires South American Adhesives and Sealants Manufacturer

ITW Permatex has acquired Anaerobicos S.A., a privately owned maker of adhesives and sealants headquartered in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Anaerobicos has been manufacturing silicones, cyanoacrylates, anaerobics, adhesives and other sealants since 1972. Anaerobicos S.A. operates two industrial plants, a raw materials production facility in San Luis, Argentina, and a headquarters and manufacturing facility in San Martin, Buenos Aires, province. The Buenos Aires plant also houses the company’s central offices, state-of-the-art R&D laboratory and collapsible aluminum tubes manufacturing. The company employs more than 185 people in Argentina and Brazil.

Survey Finds Automaker’s U.S. Jobs and Investments Influence Car-Buying Decisions

Three out of four Americans care about where the cars they buy are assembled, where auto parts are made and how many jobs each automaker supports. A national survey of 715 likely car buyers found that 79 percent of Americans are more likely to purchase a car if the manufacturer is based in the United States, while 74 percent say they are more likely to buy a car if the company producing it employs significantly more U.S. workers than its competitors. Seventy-eight percent of those polled said they pay at least "some" attention to where the parts of an automobile are made.
