The earthquake that touched off the massive disaster has now been upgraded from an 8.9 magnitude event to a 9.0 magnitude, one of the strongest earthquakes in recorded global history. Thousands of bodies have been washing ashore along northeastern Japan shorelines, victims of the tsunami that literally removed entire towns from the map. And a continuing threat of a massive meltdown at two nuclear power plants has forced the evacuation of tens of thousands of people already in need of homes.
